AUTONOMY AND CREATIVITY

In the competitive world of business, the phrase "creativity and innovation" has become a common slogan for most, if not all, organizations. However, in spite of its universal appeal and widespread acceptance, the majority of CEOs and executives do not know how to bring creativity into pre-existing company structures that require the opposite of creativity - conformity. Therefore the challenges for top executives are to come up with different structures that allow creative teams to maximize their potential within corporate organizations. After all, the ultimate goal is to effectively lead a creative team to bring innovation and thus strategically position the company for the changing market. The single most important and necessary feature that takes center stage in the structure of a creative team is autonomy. In this chapter, I present the definition of autonomy and how it relates to creativity. Furthermore, I present examples of creative teams working effectively in autonomous structure from well-credited publications and report.
