THE ROLE OF LEADERS

In our times the new bottom line is no bottom line–there aren’t any lines, much less limits or logic. Life in this century is spontaneous, contrary, unexpected, and ambiguous. In order to become a capable leader in our fields, we need to recognize our contexts and declare our independence. We need encouraging and motivated leaders to take responsibility for the effectiveness of our organizations. We need them as ballasts in our lives. We recognize them when we hear them expressing themselves: they know themselves, they know their goals and how to achieve them, and they communicate that to others in a way that provokes collaboration, alliance and support.

In this chapter, we will summarize the characteristics and skills that usually identify a leader based on the research and definitions of Warren Bennis. (Bennis, 2003) In addition, we included the example of Hartmut Esslinger, who became one of the most recognized design leaders of the last three decades.
